About Talstok

Talstok is retail software for independent UK shops. The till, the stock, the online shop and the back office work from one set of records, in a web browser.

How it is built

  • One set of records

The till, the stock and the online shop read and write the same records, so a sale at the counter and an order online come off one count.

  • Each shop on its own

Each shop’s records are kept in a database of their own, and every row is checked against the shop it belongs to.

  • The money goes to the shop

Online, card payments go through Stripe into the shop’s own Stripe account, and an online order is marked paid only when Stripe says so. At the counter, the shop takes cards on its own card machine and the till records them.

  • Records kept

Orders are never deleted, every price change is kept, and a shop can download all of its records as CSV and JSON.

  • Switch on what you use

A deli turns on batches and dates. A phone shop turns on grades and serial numbers. The parts a shop does not use stay out of its menus.

  • Open to developers

An API covers products, stock, orders, customers and settings, and an MCP server lets an AI assistant work in a shop with a key’s permissions.

Where the name comes from

A tally stick was a stick notched to record a debt, then split along its length so that each side kept half. The halves had to match, so neither side could change the record alone. Tal, the tally; stok, the stock.

The mark is a block set on a ledge with a point beside it: a thing put where it belongs.

Where it is now

Talstok is new. Real shops use it today, and the main changes to it are dated in the Ledger as they go live.

Signing up on this site is not open yet. Until it opens, a shop starts by writing to us for a free test shop, and we set it up by hand.

Talstok costs from £20 a month for each shop that takes real money, and test shops are free. Plans for each kind of shop, with add-ons on top, are being decided. The pricing page will say what each includes once they are.

What is built, and what is not, is said plainly on each page, and the main points are on one page of facts.

A test shop is free. Nothing in it is real: no money moves, and it never emails a customer. You pay only once a shop takes real money.
