For shops that buy and sell second-hand

Grades that say what each one means, the price you pay in each, and every item kept as itself, with its own grade, price and photos.

The Grades screen of a demo phone shop: the grade Excellent, shown to customers as Like new, with its promise (no marks, fully working, battery health of 85% or more, a charging cable and 12 months' warranty), paid at 100% of the best grade and marked Refurbished.

A price for every grade

Set what you pay for each model in each grade: a cash price, a store-credit price or both. Type the list in, or import it from a spreadsheet.

  • Grading questions whose answers decide the grade.
  • Buy prices per gram for gold and silver, beside prices per item.
  • Each price kept with the date it applies from, so last month’s list is still there.
  • All of it open to a website of your own through the public catalogue, so it can show a seller your price first. The online shop Talstok runs for you does not show buy prices or grading questions yet.

Selling it on

Once an item is bought in, the till sells it as itself. Your online shop does too, once you tick Customers choose the exact item on the product.

  • Every item as itself

Each one keeps its serial number or IMEI, grade, price, facts and photos. Scan it and the till finds that exact item.

  • Condition as a choice

On your website the customer picks the condition, such as Excellent or Good, beside capacity and colour.

  • Grades that keep their word

Once a grade has been used on a product, its name and promise cannot be reworded, even if nothing has sold. Retire it instead, and the items carrying it keep it.

  • Recording a purchase from a member of the public, with the seller’s details and an ID check.
  • Paying sellers, and store credit. A buy-price list can show a store-credit price, but store credit itself is not built.
  • The VAT margin scheme’s stock book. Our guide to the scheme explains what it needs.

Questions

Can my website quote a price for an item someone wants to sell?

Yes, if your website is built on Talstok’s public catalogue. Your buy prices, grades and grading questions are open to it, so it can show a price for a described item before the seller comes in. The online shop Talstok runs for you does not show buy prices or grading questions yet.

Can I set buy prices for gold or silver by weight?

Yes. A buy price can be set per gram, or per millilitre, beside prices per item. Recording the purchase itself, with the seller’s details and an ID check, is not built yet.

Is there VAT on second-hand goods?

If your shop is VAT registered, VAT is due on the second-hand goods you sell, at the rate for each kind of goods: 20% for most, and 0% for some, such as books and children’s clothes. Under the VAT margin scheme it is worked out on your margin (what you sold the item for, less what you paid) rather than on the whole price.

Talstok does not keep the scheme’s stock book yet.

Can I record a purchase at the counter?

Not yet. Recording a purchase from a member of the public, with the seller’s details and an ID check, is not built, and nor is paying sellers or store credit.
